JACK METCALFE started his working life tuning and renovating church organs.He later turned to upholstering period furniture. He learned many more of hiswoodcraft skills from his late uncle during an eight-year apprenticeship.Using that foundation, Jack taught marquetry to students studying furniture-making and restoration, first at the Leeds College of Art & Design, then YorkCollege. He is currently Chairman of the Leeds Marquetry Group where he teachesand demonstrates the craft’s many techniques.
He is a great admirer of the neo-classic period of English furniture, which hebelieves shows the finest examples of applied marquetry.
JOHN APPS is a fourth-generation woodworker and was an apprentice cabinetmakerto the Robert ‘mousy’ Thompson workshops in Kilburn. He gained a full technicalcertificate in cabinet making, Certificate of Education and degree in furniturestudies from Buckinghamshire Chiltern University at Basford Hall, Nottingham.
John has worked in the furniture industry at Treske in Thirsk and as a self-employed furniture maker and restorer. He has lectured in furniture studies atYork College since 1986 and became head of the department in 1993.
John’s main interests in furniture are design, wood surface decoration,conservation and the history of furniture.
